Our museum provides detailed information on the establishment of the historic Town of Atlantic Beach, SC, a significant cultural landmark known as "The Black Pearl." This strip of primarily black-owned coastal property in Horry County has a rich history, dating back to a time when African Americans were not permitted to use the same beaches as whites in South Carolina. Through our exhibits, we highlight the resilience and cultural heritage of this community, offering visitors a deep understanding of its historical significance and the vibrant life that has flourished here over the decades.
Our museum also proudly displays artworks by some of the most prominent African Diaspora artists, spanning from the Harlem Renaissance to the present day. Our collection features masterpieces by Romare Bearden, Sam Gilliam, Lois Mailou Jones, Faith Ringgold, John Biggers, Kwesi Botchway, Beauford Delaney, Chakaia Booker, Richard Hunt, Merton Simpson, and Stephen Towns. Each piece celebrates the talent of these artists but also reflects the rich cultural tapestry of the African Diaspora. Through these works, we aim to celebrate and preserve the artistic legacy of this influential community.
