"Beyond the Gaze"

Our 2026 exhibition "Beyond the Gaze", serves as a tribute to the lived experiences and diverse narratives of African American and Indigenous Women. By intentionally challenging the external gaze, these groundbreaking women created sacred spaces where their stories are not only told but truly honored, remembered, and celebrated.

"We invite you to explore the multifaceted legacies of these extraordinary women. This collection honors the leadership of LTC Charity Adams Earley and the 6888th CPDB, the civil rights advocacy of Fannie Lou Hamer, the entrepreneurial spirit of Madam C.J. Walker, and the creative brilliance of artists like Phillis Wheatley, Nina Simone, Elizabeth Catlett, and Kay WalkingStick. Through their eyes, we move beyond mere perception toward a lens of sovereignty and respect, ensuring the legacies of African Diaspora and Indigenous women are recognized as the masterpieces they have always been. Our exhibition season opens on May 16 and runs through November 15, 2026.
